4 May 1974 – Series Two (5)

Heat five of series two featured a panel of Clifford Davis, Barbara Kelly, Mickie Most and for the second week running, Ted Ray.  The acts that hope to entertain them were;

  • Julie Dorne (vocalist)
  • Tony George (vocalist)
  • Smacky Davis (7 -piece group)
  • Stephen Wells (mind reader)
  • Jimmy Lister (comedian-impressionist)
  • John Paul Joans (comedian- singer)
  • Freewheelers (4-piece folk group)

Julie Dorne, 29-year-old blonde vocalist, was just short of five feet, but the young mother of three fine boys, was a talented vocalist and light comedienne, and as a child won a number of singing and dancing awards. She was born in Yorkshire, but made her home in Peterlee, County Durham.  She married entertainer Billy Fontayne, and by the time of her New Faces appearance had already been seen on “Opportunity Knocks”, but only as the sponsor of her husband.

Tony George was awarded the highest marks for Star Quality from the panel.  Tony completed a three week cabaret run in the London area shortly after his New Faces appearance and worked in cabaret venues across the country ranging from Devon to Yorkshire.

Magician and mindreader Stephen Wells was, at the age of 18, the Magic Circle’s youngest member.  After New Faces he performed under the name Stephen Magus, performing a death defying Russian Roulette game, asking members of his audience to fire a gun at his head, loaded with six bullets, one of which is live.


Heat Winner

The heat winner was comedian and impressionist Jimmy Lister who secured a place in the series Grand Final in July 1974.
